A competitive field of 22 will go to post on Saturday for the £150,000 William Hill Lincoln which will be run over 1m at Doncaster Racecourse, where Chazzesmee will look to land the Lincolnshire double for trainer Fozzy Stack.
The 6-year-old has been very lightly raced throughout his career, making just the four starts since January 2023. He has been in red-hot form of late though and justified favouritism in the Irish Lincolnshire in fine style on Monday at the Curragh.
The Irish haven’t won the William Hill Lincoln since Roving Minstrel sprung a 33/1 shock on Town Moor back in 1995.
Liberty Lane and Awaal have featured towards the head of the market for several weeks and have both been declared. The former has been gelded since a hugely disappointing run in the Cambridgeshire but had won over this course and distance prior to that. The latter was equally well-fancied to go close in last year’s renewal only to finish runner-up to Migration.
No horse has ever won back-to-back renewals of the William Hill Lincoln, but David Menuisier believes his 8-year-old is back to something like his best.
Menuisier said: “He won the Lincoln last year but then lost his form afterwards. We’ve changed tactics with him now and he’s been working really well. It’s a big task carrying 4lbs more than last year, but if he puts his best foot forward he can run very well.”
2023 Irish Lincolnshire winner Lattam looked a handicapper to follow after that success, but his form tailed off in the second half of the season. He has since moved to the Steve and Julie Camacho yard where he will race for new connections who are excited about what the 5-year-old can achieve this year.
Steve Camacho said: “He’s had a straightforward preparation. He’s well-handicapped and it looked the most logical place to start. He won the Irish equivalent last year and we’re looking forward to it.”
At the turn of the century, Paul Cole was renowned for his record in this contest winning it three times. He has the chance to sit alongside William Haggas and Jack Robinson as the joint-most successful trainer in William Hill Lincoln history this weekend courtesy of Thunder Ball.
Cole said: “The conditions over the Winter have been quite difficult to ask horses to do too much in but he’s fit and he’s going well. I think he’ll run very well.”
