Mandy Burns has been nominated for the St Leger Superstar Award by her colleague, Courtney, to recognise her unwavering dedication and contributions to her role at Doncaster Council. She consistently goes above and beyond in her duties and has become an unsung hero, making a significantly positive impact on the city.
Mandy has played a pivotal role in supporting the Doncaster Young Advisors through their #BeTheKindKid campaign and has written a book titled ‘Be the Kind Kid’, tackling the sensitive issue of bullying, which is a growing concern amongst lots of children throughout Doncaster and further afield. There are hundreds of copies of this book within libraries and youth clubs around the city for all to learn from and enjoy.
There are hundreds of these books in libraries and youth settings across Doncaster for children to learn from and enjoy. Mandy's unwavering commitment to promoting kindness and anti-bullying has not only enhanced the social environment in schools but also encouraged children to develop valuable life skills to talk, stand up to bullies and to be kind! Her efforts have inspired countless children and adults to practice kindness in their daily lives, contributing to a more compassionate and kinder Doncaster.
Mandy embodies the qualities of a true St Leger Superstar but she would often say “I am just doing my job” but…passion, flair, dedication and going above and beyond are not in the job description and Mandy embodies these qualities wholeheartedly.
Anya Learoyd has been nominated to become a St Leger Superstar by her husband Oliver for the incredible support that she has shown her friend who needed it. As a local DRI Nurse, she is a naturally caring person, but her compassion was showcased fully when her friend went through an incredibly tough time, suffering a series of unfortunate issues and who’s life was turned upside down.
Anya not only supported her friend emotionally but has been the driving force behind getting her life back on track. Anya always puts others first throughout her professional and personal life and it's now time that she is brought into the spotlight to have her moment of celebration and appreciation.
Michael Bateman has been nominated to become the St Leger Superstar by his son, Matthew, in recognition for the support and stability that he’s provided him and the rest of his family. Described as the backbone of the Bateman family, Michael has really stepped up since the unexpected passing of his wife, who sadly died of pancreatic cancer back in 2022. Despite being 79 years of age, nothing is too much trouble for him and he is always on hand to support his family and friends when they’re in need – from painting, gardening and DIY projects, picking his grandson up from school and taking him to football training, there’s never a job too big for him and his support is truly appreciated by the whole family. None more so than his daughter, who works full time and lives alone with her 12-year-old son. Micheal has been a key role model for his grandson and goes above and beyond to keep him entertained, even playing FIFA on the Xbox, which isn’t the usual activity for a man approaching 80 years old.
Michael worked hard all his life, only retiring at the age of 76, where he was a factory worker and had to leave the house at 5am every morning. He doesn’t live a lavish life and isn’t a materialistic man but would do anything for anyone and would give his last pound away to those in need. Becoming a St Leger Superstar and becoming a guest of honour would mean the world to him, and it’d be hard to find a more grateful winner.
Dale was nominated by his wife, Gaynor, for always being supportive and for going above and beyond despite having a very challenging year himself. Dale recently suffered a heart attack and has struggled with mental health following the passing of his parents. Despite this, Dale has been very supportive of his wife, who is also going through a tough time with her own mother, who is very ill and in hospital, ensuring that all of the housework is complete and that meals are prepared for when she returns from late night visits. He also helps others within the community where he can, walking other people’s dogs and cutting their grass, when they’re unable to do so themselves.
Dale’s father was fanatical about horse racing and always attended the St Leger festival every year, taking Dale with him from a very young age. Since his father passed away, Dale has continued this family tradition of attending the St Leger meeting every year in his honour.
