The St Leger Festival

Wednesday 13th September

The Festival kicks off with a bang when retired celebrities of the saddle dust off their breeches and return to action in the feature event competing in the charity race, a contest run on the straight mile. The Leger Legends race helps raise money for the Northern Racing College and Jack Berry House, a rehabilitation facility for injured jockeys.

Thursday 14th September

DFS Ladies day is the ultimate in glitz and glamour and one of South Yorkshire’s biggest social occasions. Fashionable Ladies from across the region will be upping their efforts to stand out in the style stakes, in a bid to claim the coveted Best Dressed Lady title so make sure you get your best dress and heels at the ready!

Friday 15th September

The penultimate day of the iconic Festival, now known as Gentlemen’s day, attracts some of the most prestigious racing of the week, with the Doncaster Cup, the oldest race currently run under the Rules of Horse Racing, taking centre-stage.

Saturday 16th September

The St Leger Festival’s flagship day brings the four days to a dramatic climax. The biggest day of the week and home to the World’s oldest Classic, the St Leger Stakes.

The Doncaster Cup, first run in the town in 1766 and is now in its 251st year. First staged 10 years before the inaugural running of the world’s oldest Classic, the St Leger, the Group Two feature today forms part of the Quipco British Champions’ Series and is the final leg of the prestigious stayers’ triple crown.

Originally called the Doncaster Gold Cup and run over four miles, the race took place at Cantley Common until moving to Town Moor in 1776. Today the best staying thoroughbreds in Britain and Ireland compete over two and a quarter miles on the Friday of the St Leger Festival.

The most successful horse was Beeswing, who won the Doncaster Cup four times between 1837 and 1842, while the winning-most jockey was Joe Mercer who took his tally to eight with back-to-back triumphs on the great Le Moss in 1979 and 1980.

Cecil Boyd-Rochfort made the race his own with seven wins between 1934 and 1963, a record equalled only by his stepson, the late Sir Henry Cecil, who warmed modern-day crowds with the likes of Buckskin (1978), Le Moss and Ardross in 1982.

However, the most celebrated winner in the modern era is Mark Johnston’s popular chestnut Double Trigger, whose victory in 1995 saw him complete the stayers’ triple crown – the Ascot Gold Cup, the Goodwood Cup and, of course, the Doncaster Cup. Trigger’s three wins are commemorated by a bronze statue adjacent to the racecourse’s main grandstand.

There are four main ticket types

Premier Enclosure / County Enclosure / Grandstand Enclosure / Family Enclosure

Premier Enclosure

Situated on the third floor of the main Grandstand, the Premier Enclosure allows for uninterrupted views of the racecourse. We limit the number of guests to ensure exclusivity, maximum comfort and first-class service.

County Enclosure

Modern and comfortable facilities across three floors of the main Grandstand and offers a great choice of bars and a variety of places to eat. Viewing access to the Parade Ring and Winners' Enclosure, plus on-course bookmakers. The County Enclosure is also the home to the Champagne Lawn: the place to be during our numerous summer racedays. Find our popular restaurant and bar, The Old Weighing Room, right here too.

Grandstand Enclosure

Light, modern and spacious, the Grandstand Enclosure benefits from a great choice of bars and places to eat, all situated at ground-floor level. The seated Food Court (up the escalator to the first floor) has plenty of choice. You can choose to stay inside or step outside on to our seated terrace. Overlooking the racecourse, it allows for views of the Parade Ring and Winners' Enclosure. The Grandstand Enclosure features ample outdoor space for on-course bookmakers.

Family Enclosure

The Family Enclosure offers everything for the whole family within one area. Picnics are allowed (no alcohol). The Family Enclosure features a Tote betting facility, on-course bookmakers and a cash-point with occasional children's entertainment. Under 18s go free when accompanied by a paying adult (ID may be required).

Best Dressed Lady 2017

The Best Dressed Lady competition is one on the highlights of the Festival, where the finest fillies get glammed up in an attempt to win a glittering array of fantastic prizes.

Our crack team of fashion scouts will be scouring the racecourse on the day. If you want to be on their hit-list, make sure you are in one of the below locations:

  • Main County Enclosure reception
  • The Champagne Lawn area
  • The Centre Course Marquee
  • All restaurants
  • Around the 'Double Trigger' bronze statue in the Grandstand Enclosure

The winner of the coveted title will then go on to represent Doncaster Racecourse in the final of 'Yorkshire's Best Dressed Lady 2017' - to be held at our Racing Post Trophy meeting in October.
